چکیده

We used a Couette cell placed within an NMR microscopy apparatus to examine molecular alignment in polydimethylsiloxane melts under shear. 1H dipolar interactions are used to examine main chain ordering while 2H NMR quadrupole splittings are measured in a deuterated oligomer probe, in each case selectively observing different alignment orientations with respect to the flow field. While the main chain results are consistent with the alignment tensor as measured by birefringence, the oligomer senses a uniaxial environment whose director is normal to the velocity-vorticity plane. In the light of these results we propose supramolecular ordering involving polymer stratification. [S0031-9007(98)07618-2]

The influence of branching efficiency on the rheology and morphology of melt state long chain branched polypropylene/polybutene-1 blends

In this study, the compatibility of the blends of polypropylene (PP) and polybutene-1(PB-1) homopolymer before and after long chain branching process were studied. The blends were prepared and long-chain branched directly via reactive extrusion process in presence of free radical initiator and trimethylolpropane tri methacrylate (TMPTMA) poly functional monomer. The optimum percentage of TMPTMA...

Flow boundary conditions for chain-end adsorbing polymer blends.

Using the phenol-terminated polycarbonate blend as an example, we demonstrate that the hydrodynamic boundary conditions for a flow of an adsorbing polymer melt are extremely sensitive to the structure of the epitaxial layer. Under shear, the adsorbed parts (chain ends) of the polymer melt move along the equipotential lines of the surface potential whereas the adsorbed additives serve as the sur...

NMR Measurement of the Alignment Tensor for a Polymer Melt under Strong Shearing Flow

2H NMR quadrupole interaction spectroscopy has been used to measure the deformation of a 610 kD PDMS melt under shear in a Couette cell. The signals were acquired from a perdeuterated benzene probe molecule, which provides a motionally averaged sampling of the entire segmental ensemble. Our Rheo-NMR method involves the use of a selective storage precursor pulse, which enables one to observe NMR...

Constitutive equations for a polymer fluid based on the concept of non-affine networks

Constitutive equations are developed for a polymer fluid, which is treated as a permanent network of strands bridged by junctions. The junctions are assumed to slide with respect to their reference positions under loading. Governing equations are derived by using the laws of thermodynamics under the assumption that the vorticity tensor for the flow of junctions is proportional to that for macro...

Excluded volume effects on the structure of a linear polymer under shear flow

The effect of excluded volume interactions on the structure of a polymer in shear flow is investigated by Brownian Dynamics simulations for chains with size 30 ≤ N ≤ 300. The main results concern the structure factor S(q) of chains of N=300 Kuhn segments, observed at a reduced shear rate β = γ̇τ = 3.2, where γ̇ is the bare shear rate and τ is the longest relaxation time of the chain. At low q, wh...
